I’m heartbroken to say that due to the end of my marriage and the changes in living situation that have come with it, I need to find a new home for my beloved whippet, Raymond. This is not a decision I’ve made lightly. He’s been an incredible companion, and I want to ensure he finds a home where he’ll be just as loved.
Raymond is a 3-year-old male whippet/lurcher with a sweet, affectionate nature. He’s playful, energetic when he wants to be, and absolutely adores a good run followed by long cuddles on the couch. He’s very friendly with other pets and is always happy to meet new people and dogs. He is desexed, microchipped, and up to date with all vaccinations.
He would thrive in a calm, loving home with someone who has the time and heart to give him the companionship and exercise he needs. Whippets are sensitive, loyal dogs and do best when they’re close to their humans. In new situations, Raymond can experience a bit of separation anxiety, but this usually settles within a few days. While very friendly, he can occasionally bark at passing dogs when on a lead, purely out of frustration at not being able to say hello.
He’s also very communicative. If you’re not giving him enough attention, he’ll absolutely let you know. Raymond has always been an indoor dog and would not cope with being outdoors only. Like most of his breed, he’s a connoisseur of comfy dog beds and especially loves human couches and beds.
Raymond would do well with other playful dogs but likely wouldn’t suit an elderly dog or one that prefers a quiet life. He tends to greet people by jumping up and gets excited with loud environments, so he may not be the best fit for families with very young children. Confident kids aged eight and up should be fine. That said, for most of the day, he’s a relaxed lounger with short bursts of joyful energy.
He’s reasonably well-trained, intelligent and loves learning new tricks. His recall is decent, though he is a sight hound, so he may ignore you if he spots potential prey like cats. He currently lives with cats, but only because he’s known them since puppyhood. He likely wouldn’t tolerate new feline housemates.
He can be left alone for periods during the day, but it’s important to manage that transition with care. I’m happy to guide you through how best to support him at the beginning.
Overall, Raymond is a bundle of hilarity with a truly sweet and gentle soul. Few things are more glorious than watching him sprint full tilt down the beach after a stick. It’s a joy to witness.
I’m based in Gisborne and happy to meet with potential adopters to ensure it’s the right match. I’m also open to travelling or meeting halfway if you’re based further out. If you’re interested, please tell me a bit about yourself and feel free to ask any questions.
Thank you for considering giving Raymond the loving new beginning he deserves.
