Pet Rescue NZ is a family-run, independent online pet rehoming platform helping Kiwi families safely and responsibly rehome dogs, cats, and companion animals across Aotearoa.
We are not government funded. We are not a corporate rescue organisation. We are everyday New Zealanders who care deeply about animals and the families who love them.
Why We Created Pet Rescue NZ
Across New Zealand, families sometimes face circumstances beyond their control: rental restrictions, financial hardship, health challenges, or relocation. When someone searches “I need to rehome my dog” — it is rarely casual. It is usually emotional and heavy.
Many people delay asking for help because they fear judgment. We created Pet Rescue NZ to provide a responsible, compassionate pathway — one that supports families before situations escalate.
The Emotional Reality for Pets
Animals do not understand housing contracts or financial pressure. When a pet enters a high-stress environment — unfamiliar smells, barking, cages — it can be overwhelming.
We believe that where possible, a carefully managed private rehoming process can reduce that stress by:
- Allowing pets to transition directly into a new home
- Enabling gradual communication between families
- Providing transparency about routines and personality
- Preserving dignity during a difficult change
Preventing the Feeling of Abandonment
One of the hardest things to witness is a pet experiencing sudden separation without understanding why. When owners are able to responsibly introduce their pet to a new family, it can reduce sudden shock and create smoother transitions.
We believe pets deserve thoughtful transitions, not abrupt change where avoidable.
We Respect Shelters — But We Offer Another Option
Animal shelters across NZ do incredible work, but they are often overcapacity and under-resourced. Pet Rescue NZ exists to support responsible owners before a situation reaches crisis level.
By helping families rehome pets privately, we can reduce unnecessary shelter intake and ease pressure on animal welfare charities. This is about collaboration — not competition.
A Family-Run Platform Built With Heart
Pet Rescue NZ began as a small family initiative. No grants, no investors, no government backing. We operate 100% online, independently funded and supported by friends and whānau.
We do this through late nights and constant learning—not because it is profitable, but because we care.
Our Commitment to Responsible Rehoming
We strongly encourage honest disclosure, proper vet care, and responsible adopter screening. Rehoming is not about convenience; it is about safeguarding an animal’s future.
Every feature we build is filtered through one question: Is this in the best interest of the pet?
