We hope to find a suitable, single person home for Nelson. As you see he is beautiful; an affectionate, happy, pure bred Border Collie, 22 months old. He loves to play and meet new people and new dogs. He’s quite a good security dog too with an ear for an intruder and a healthy alert bark. He has been raised in a loving home with great nutrition, medical care, play and loads of quality time and he has been socialised with a variety of dogs and people. He is toilet trained and never soils the house except for muddy feet. He knows some good commands. He was brought up in Dunedin but we all moved to Auckland. I will absolutely consider helping with transport costs to wherever. Nelson is fully vax’d, neutered, microchipped, healthy.
Reason for rehoming – please read thoroughly:
Nelson resource guards.
The resource in both our situation and in the unsuccessful rehoming experience of last week is the female owner. He sees the female of the house as his primary provider (resource) and the male of the house as a rival to his resource. Within the home situation i.e. not outside the home – Nelson will snap and snarl at the male if he comes too close to the female, not always but enough to cause unrest in a partnership. There is potential for the male in this two person household scenario, to be bitten or at least, lunged at.
Therefore, Nelson is suited to one person who lives alone. This owner can be male or female. Nelson has been observed to be happy and friendly with many males – be they a gardener (a regular to our property, several days a week) or a male leader of adventure pack runs or male dog trainers. It is when they inside “Nelson’s” home with a female owner that the aggressive guarding begins.
I don’t know if he’d be good with cats. He was brought up from 8 weeks old with two large cats in the house but they were awesome and chill. He’s been observed wanting to chase a cat.
He loves kids and wags his whole body and wants to meet them but he jumps up on them but I don’t know how he’d be with them in a household but potentially not good as his resource guarding might extend to them.
Happy to answer any queries.
