Pet Rescue NZ is New Zealandβs premier peer-to-peer rehoming platform. Unlike traditional animal shelters or pounds, we facilitate a direct connection between current owners and potential adopters.
Why Home-to-Home? Traditional shelters can be loud, stressful, and overwhelming for animals. By rehoming directly, pets stay in a familiar environment until their new family is found, leading to a smoother transition and more honest information sharing.
Rehoming is a major life event. We provide the tools to ensure you find the perfect match for your pet's specific needs.
Upload clear photos and write a detailed description of your pet's routine, temperament, and requirements (e.g., "no cats" or "needs high fences").
Interested adopters will message you via our secure portal. You have full control to ask questions about their home life and experience.
Arrange a meeting in a safe, public location or at your home. Observe how the pet interacts with the new family.
Once you are 100% satisfied, use our transfer documents to pass on vet records, registration, and the pet to their new home.
Ready to adopt? View all animals needing a new home now. Quickly search through Pet Rescue NZ's community listings. Find your match from dogs, cats, rabbits, and more, all seeking a safe, loving new life.
Use our advanced filters to find pets by region, age, gender, and breed. Save your favourites to track their availability.
Click "Enquire" on a listing to message the owner. Introduce yourself, explain your home setup, and ask about the pet's history.
Meet the pet in a neutral territory or at the owner's home. It is essential to see how the pet responds to you and your family.
Complete the adoption by receiving the pet's vaccination cards, microchip details, and local council registration (for dogs).
It is free to list a pet for rehoming. We offer optional upgrades to help pets find homes faster by increasing visibility on the homepage and search results.
Your safety and the welfare of the animals are our top priorities. Follow these essential NZ safety steps:
Private rehoming is legal in New Zealand, but both parties have obligations under the Animal Welfare Act 1999.
When a dog changes owners, the local council must be notified within 14 days. This is a legal requirement for both the previous and new owner.
We provide a free template to document the change of ownership, ensuring that the history and health records of the pet are legally transferred.
Most pets find a match within 2-3 weeks, though breeds in high demand may find a home in days. Use a Featured package to speed up the process.
As a platform, we provide the tools for vetting, but the final decision rests with the owner. We provide checklists and guides to help you make a safe choice.
We recommend including a "trial period" in your adoption agreement. If a pet needs to be returned, the original owner usually takes them back or we help relist them immediately.
We are a community-focused social enterprise dedicated to reducing shelter overcrowding. Visibility packages help us maintain the technology and support team.
