Do these first
Lost your pet
- Search your street, sheds and garages, and call their name at quiet times.
- Phone your local council animal control and nearby vet clinics.
- Check their microchip details are up to date with the register.
- Post here, then print the poster.

Found a pet
- Check for a collar, tag or council registration disc.
- Most vets will scan for a microchip, usually free.
- For a dog, tell your council animal control.
- Post here so the owner can find them. Please don’t rehome a found pet.

Questions
I found a dog. Can I keep it?
Please don’t keep or rehome a found pet: someone is probably looking for them. Report a found dog to your council animal control, ask a vet to scan for a microchip, and post here.
Someone says they have my pet and wants money first
That’s a common scam. Never pay before you see your pet in person, and meet somewhere public. Ask about markings only you would know. Report the message with the flag button.
How do I know it’s really my pet?
Ask for a recent photo, check markings only you know, and if they’re microchipped, any vet can confirm the chip number.
How long does a post stay up?
Lost posts stay up for 30 days, then we email you to renew or mark them reunited. Found posts stay up until you take them down.
Who gets the alert?
Members who’ve turned on lost pet alerts near where the pet went missing or was found. They see the suburb, never your address.
Lost and found on Pet Rescue NZ is free. We help spread the word; we can’t guarantee a pet will be found, and arrangements between members are up to them.
